Mauricio Rivera R.
I am a writer, journalist, scholar and visual artist born in Bogota, Colombia. I studied journalism and communications in Colombia and later undertook postgraduate studies in Melbourne, Australia: including a masters degree in professional communication with an emphasis in creative writing from Deakin University and a PhD in journalism and media studies from RMIT University. During the past decade I have combined my work in academia and freelance journalism with the production of multiple literary and audio-visual artworks.

Soy escritor, periodista, académico y artista visual. Obtuve mi título de Periodista y Comunicador Social en Colombia y después realicé estudios de postgrado en Melbourne, Australia, incluyendo una maestría en escritura creativa de la Universidad de Deakin y un doctorado en periodismo y comunicaciones de la Universidad de RMIT. A lo largo de los últimos seis años he combinado mi trabajo en la academia y como periodista independiente con la producción de varias obras literarias y audiovisuales.

This essay studies a selection of scenes from The Embrace of the Serpent, and compare them to different journalistic and literary works that relate to an episode known as the Rubber Holocaust (or Holocausto Cauchero).
